About the event

National Statistics Day 2026

ISI Chennai is hosting meritorious students and teachers from the Model Schools run by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The visit gives these students an oppertunity to interact with — its people, its ideas, and the kind of questions statisticians spend their careers answering.

While the Institute shares its expertise through invited talks and discussions, hosting students and teachers from across Tamil Nadu also gives ISI Chennai a chance to learn — to understand how young learners think, what excites them, and how the next generation of curious minds engages with ideas that statisticians work with every day.

Speakers

Speaker 1

Dr. Tamoghna Halder

Azim Premji University, Bangalore
Talk Title
Sivaji, the Coin, and the Power of Statistics
You may have heard your mathematics teacher saying, "Maths is the mother of all subjects". Or your physics teacher may have said, "Physics is the fundamental science". Believe it or not, Biologists think we are all biology, and Chemistry teachers believe the world survives because of Chemistry! Well, none of them are wrong, but in this lecture we will claim that ultimately we are all governed by Statistical principles.
In this talk, we will use examples to illustrate why Statistics forms the backbone of almost every subject we study in our schools, colleges and universities. We will talk about fun examples: What happens when a statistician looks at a human skull? How to solve a murder mystery or catch a serial killer? How do digits become OTP? The end goal of the talk will be to illustrate that in the blockbuster Rajnikanth movie, Sivaji The Boss, the real hero is the coin that Sivaji was tossing.
While examples do not provide proof of a claim, the speaker is confident that some in the audience will pursue a degree in Statistics and one day, come up with a more formal proof that Statistics indeed forms the backbone of all the sciences.
Speaker 2

Dr. D. Sampangi Raman

Indian Statistical Institute, Chennai
Talk Title
An Invitation to Explore the Wisdom of Statistics
In this one-hour interactive session with higher secondary school students, the speaker aims to inspire young minds to consider the ever-evolving field of Mathematical Statistics as a career choice. The relevance and applications of statistics in modern life are expanding rapidly, influencing nearly every domain that relies on data-driven reasoning and informed decision-making. Through this talk, students will gain an appreciation of the vital role that statistics plays in science, technology, business, public policy, and everyday life.
